I just finished watching this and enjoyed it very much. I was considering taking some time to understand the code, thinking that all the new words meant something more fundamental than NewSpeak and gaslighting. Again, great video. Thank you for making it and sharing it freely. Crypto has obviously made a few insanely rich -- if they were either exceptionally lucky gamblers or highly immoral. Crypto has made more than a few exceptionally broke.

Don't you remember in the 90s when one of the earliest adopters of the internet just decided it was bad and stopped using it? We are still early.
Anyone here work as a blockchain developer? What's it like?
Main Post:
I'm a full stack SWE and am thinking about learning some blockchain on the side for fun. I know there are professional applications to blockchain development and I'm curious about what that's like. I would love any input. Here are some questions to kick off the discussion:
- What kind of company do you work for? Is it a blockchain specific company or a company looking to add blockchain to their tech?
- How is the dev ecosystem? Is it enjoyable to work in? How is documentation, community support and tooling?
- How did you learn blockchain development? How did you transition into your first role?
- What are the salary expectations?
- Do you see a future for blockchain development? Do you think the hype that blockchain will change the world is warranted?
Looking forward to some interesting discussion, thanks!

Yes I worked for one a couple of years ago.
I got paid heaps, but I hated it. The technology made no sense for the application. I realised it was just a company that raised heaps in an ICO, at the financial expense of gullible idiots.
Having said that, there are some pretty smart people working in the ecosystem, and there are peripheral distributed technologies like ipfs that I was glad to learn about.

Is blockchain development worth it?
Main Post:
I am currently in the first semester of my university for computer science. I really got keen interest in blockchain development but I was curious about the requirements and if its something that's worth jt compared to the other fields in the world of tech as NFTs, smart contracts and more booming rn.

If I were you I would just be trying to explore all the things I could get my hands on. Do blockchain dev but also try web design, video games, ML training, IoT, etc. College is a great time to focus on learning, you'll have plenty of time to build a career later and things may be completely different by the time you graduate anyway. If you get your feet wet in different areas now, it could help you pivot between different jobs in the future.
What kind of Salary should a Blockchain developer expect?
Main Post:
I have spoken to a few friends and they seem to believe that the market still favours more general devs. What are your opinions?

Is it feasible to become a blockchain developer for someone new to programming?
Main Post:
I graduated from university recently having taken a computer science course and am starting to get into developing for ethereum. In an ideal world I'd like to world as a blockchain developer or freelance witihin this area. Is this something that is feasible to somebody with little real world development experience, I have this notion in my head that this stuff is advanced, I understand security is extremely important so I don't know whether I should avoid this area or not

It’s feasible, but it can be challenging. I would recommend learning mostly JS/React with some Solidity. This would set you up to develop dApps. JS/React are really a huge part of it, so I’d recommend focusing ~75% of your time there, 25% on solidity.
I will add that programming for Ethereum is a different paradigm, which requires you to be maximally resource efficient. With that, I’d recommend that you get strong with algorithms, data structures, and using big O notation to wrap your head around complexity.
EDIT: Mastering Ethereum is a must read too if you’re gonna develop on Ethereum.
Poll: what are salaries like as a software engineer in the blockchain space?
Main Post:
Im currently interviewing and evaluating offers. I'm coming over from traditional software engineering, not a lot of blockchain-specific knowledge beyond core algorithms, 5 yrs experience.
What ballpark numbers are the norm in this field? For open source software?

I'm in Australia and have seen people on up to $250k AUD (~185k USD) if they know what they are doing. When my employer was hiring Blockchain engineers/devs we were offering around $150k USD
